Absorption et régénération de l'azote dans le système brassé de la Manche : productions nouvelle et régénérée ArchiMer
Maguer, Jf; L'Helguen, S; Madec, C; Le Corre, P.
Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were measured in spring and summer in deep and shallow well-mixed waters of the English Channel during different cruises between 1986 and 1994. In the deep waters, nitrate uptake was relatively low during phytoplankton development and ammonium uptake represented more than 70 % of the total uptake irrespective of the season. In the shallow waters, nitrate uptake during spring phytoplankton growth was high and represented about 75 % of the total uptake. Ammonium uptake became substantial towards the end of spring and summer. The high contribution of ammonium to the nitrogenous nutrition of phytoplankton over the whole of the well-mixed waters is related to a high rate of recycling of nitrogen in the water column. Ammonium...

Copper and zinc forms in soil fertilized with pig slurry in the bean crop AGRIAMBI
Grohskopf,Marco A.; Correa,Juliano C.; Cassol,Paulo C.; Nicoloso,Rodrigo S.; Fernandes,Dirceu M..
ABSTRACT The application of pig slurry may have different influence on copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) dynamics in the soil compared with mineral fertilization. The aim of this research was to determine the different forms of Cu and Zn in soil and their uptake by bean plants in response to the application of mineral fertilizer and pig slurry (PS). The treatments were: mineral fertilizer (Cu and Zn oxides) and liquid pig slurry, at increasing rates (0/0, 1.7/6.0, 3.4/12.0 and 6.8/24.0 kg ha-1 Cu/Zn, respectively) applied in a Rhodic Kandiudox. PS increased the Cu content in soil in the exchangeable form, Fe oxides and residual, while the mineral fertilizer increased Cu contents in the fraction associated with soil organic matter. Soil Zn contents in the fractions...

Gut passage times in two bivalve molluscs fed toxic microalgae: Alexandrium minutum, A-catenella and Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha ArchiMer
Gueguen, Marielle; Lassus, Patrick; Laabir, Mohamed; Bardouil, Michele; Baron, Regis; Sechet, Veronique; Truquet, Philippe; Amzil, Zouher; Barille, Laurent.
The occurrence of new phytoplankton species in a coastal area may be explained by the import of shellfish containing whole live algal cells in their digestive tracts. Indeed, shellfish containing toxic algal cells can induce both primary contaminations in safe areas ( initially free from toxic microalgae), and secondary contaminations of other shellfish growing in the same area via the faeces of the imported animals. To mitigate this problem, shellfish need to be placed in a separate holding tank and their intestinal content purged. For a deeper understanding of the risks associated with transferring contaminated shellfish, oysters ( Crassostrea gigas) and mussels ( Mytilus edulis) were purposely fed either Alexandrium minutum or A. catenella (...

II. Heat stress in Triticum: kinetics of Cu and Zn accumulation Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dias,Ana S.; Lidon,Fernando C..
The interactions between high temperatures and Cu/Zn accumulation were investigated in bread and durum wheat. Plants were grown in a greenhouse, at two different temperatures regimes (control - 25/14ºC and heat stress - 31/20ºC), and the contents and uptake/translocation of Cu and Zn were evaluated during three developmental stages of plant growth (booting, grain filling and maturity). During grain filling and at maturity it was found that root, shoot and spike concentrations of Cu increased in heat stressed plants of the genotypes Golia and Acalou. The same trend was observed for root and shoot concentrations of Zn in both durum wheat genotypes. It was concluded that plants submitted to high temperatures (during the grain filling period) become more...

Inhibition of iron and copper uptake by iron, copper and zinc Biol. Res.
ARREDONDO,MIGUEL; MARTÍNEZ,RONNY; NÚÑEZ,MARCO T; RUZ,MANUEL; OLIVARES,MANUEL.
Interactions of micronutrients can affect absorption and bioavailability of other nutrients by a number of mechanisms. In aqueous solutions, and at higher uptake levels, competition between elements with similar chemical characteristics and uptake process can take place. The consequences of these interactions may depend on the relative concentrations of the nutrients. In this work, we measure the effects of increasing concentrations of iron, zinc, and copper on iron and copper uptake in Caco-2 cells. Intracellular Fe or Cu levels were affected by incubating with increased concentrations of metals. However, when the cells already had different intracellular metal concentration, the uptake of Fe or Cu was nor affected. In competition studies, we showed that...

Iron Uptake by Fungi Isolated from Arcelor Mittal -Annaba- in the Northeast of Algeria Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Bourzama,G; Ouled-Haddar,H; Marrouche,M; Aliouat,A.
ABSTRACT The Metal pollution is one of the major risks in the world nowadays. Iron is an essential metal for growth and proliferation of a vast majority of organisms, but it can be toxic to human health and other living beings in the environment at high concentrations due to its increased industrial activity. Fungi have a remarkable capacity to uptake and detoxify iron metal using different mechanisms such as bioaccumulation. Thus, the aim of this work is to study the ability of iron uptake by the fungal strains isolated from Arcelor Mittal -Annaba- in Algeria. Three strains were screened at high concentration of iron (1 g/l) and their capacity to uptake iron has been studied on Czapek Yeast Agar medium. The amounts of uptaken iron ions were estimated in...

IV.Heat stress in Triticum: kinetics of Fe and Mn accumulation Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dias,Ana S.; Lidon,Fernando C.; Ramalho,José C..
The interactions between Fe/Mn accumulation and the photosynthetic light reactions were investigated in heat stressed bread and durum wheat genotypes (Triticum aestivum L. and Triticum turgidum subsp.durum). Four genotypes were chosen according to its genetic background diversity. Plants were grown in a greenhouse at two different day/night temperatures regimes (control - 25/14ºC and heat stress - 31/20ºC), during the grain filling phase. The contents and uptake/translocation of Fe and Mn were evaluated on booting, grain filling and maturity and correlated with chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. It was found that, under heat stress, the concentrations of Fe in the culm and leaves diminished in bread wheat, but increased in durum wheat. An opposite...

Mycorrhizal effectiveness and manganese toxicity in soybean as affected by soil type and endophyte Scientia Agricola
Nogueira,Marco Antonio; Cardoso,Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira.
Mycorrhizal plants may present Mn toxicity alleviation and this depends on the plant-endophyte-environment interaction. The effectiveness of three arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus macrocarpum, G. etunicatum, G. intraradices) and a control without AMF in two soils: Typic Rhodudalf with high Mn availability and a Typic Quartzipsamment, with low Mn availability, was evaluated in a time-course experiment at 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks after soybean (Glycine max L.) seedling emergence. The objective was to select the most effective AMF species to enhance plant growth and to assess its effects upon Mn uptake by plants and Mn availability in the soil. For the sandy soil, AMF inoculation resulted in increased plant biomass, especially with G. intraradices and...

Uptake and nitrogen efficiency in forage maize: effects of nitrogen and plant density Agrociencia
Fallah,S.; Tadayyon,A..
Efficient nitrogen (N) fertilizer management is critical for the economic production of maize (Zea mays L.) and the long-term protection of environmental quality. To study the effects of N doses and plant density on the N uptake and efficiency on forage maize cv. SC 704, an experiment was conducted in the Shahrekord region (32° 21' N, 50° 49' E; altitude 2050 m), Iran, at the Agricultural Research Station of Shahrekord University, during the 2007 growing season. The experiment was arranged with four plant densities (92 600, 104 200, 119 000 and 138 900 plants ha-1) and four nitrogen doses (200, 240, 280 and 320 kg ha-1) in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Increases of the plant density led to a significant N uptake in stalk, grain...

Uptake of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen by the benthic toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata ArchiMer
Jauzein, Cecile; Couet, Douglas; Blasco, Thierry; Lemee, Rodolphe.
Environmental factors that shape dynamics of benthic toxic blooms are largely unknown. In particular, for the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata, the importance of the availability of nutrients and the contribution of the inorganic and organic pools to growth need to be quantified in marine coastal environments. The present study aimed at characterizing N-uptake of dissolved inorganic and organic sources by O. cf. ovata cells, using the 15N-labelling technique. Experiments were conducted taking into account potential interactions between nutrient uptake systems as well as variations with the diel cycle. Uptake abilities of O. cf. ovata were parameterized for ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3−) and N-urea, from the estimation of kinetic and inhibition...

Variations saisonnières de l'absorption de l'azote dans un système brassé peu profond (Manche occidentale) ArchiMer
Maguer, Jf; Lecorre, P; Madec, C.
Seasonal changes in inorganic (NH4+; NO3-; NO2-) and organic (urea) nitrogen uptake were studied with N-15 as a tracer at a shallow station (depth: 22 m) in permanently well-mixed waters of the Western English Channel. Uptake of all the four nutrients was maximum in spring. Nitrate uptake accounted for a third of the total during spring phytoplankton growth, but decrease in summer. This decrease was related to the low ambient nitrate concentrations in early summer and to an inhibition of uptake by high concentrations in late summer. Ammonium was taken up in significant amounts from the beginning of spring (46 % of total uptake), increasing to 59 % in summer. In contrast with nitrate, ammonium concentrations during summer were sufficiently high to saturate...
